An ELIMINATA® Laser-Copier Saver used with a typical workgroup printer will save £110 over 5 years and eliminate around 500Kg of CO2, its styling combined with locally developed technology makes this a worthy candidate for the CIF. DesignEdge has worked with local company ERP (Energy Reducing Products) to produce the first of the ELIMINATA® range of products that save businesses money by cutting wasted energy in existing office appliances. ELIMINATA Energy Savers are completely automatic and deliver quick pay back - often within 12 months. ‘Plug-in and Forget’ smart technology adapts to office appliances, automatically turning them off when not in use and back on when needed. DesignEdge created an electrically safe, high volume, stylish product that could be adapted into product variants - a Laser- Copier saver; Water Dispenser saver for water coolers and boilers; and a Laptop saver for computers, all in floor-box socket and wall socket versions.

Abcam is a Cambridge based company dedicated to supplying the largest online catalogue of antibodies in the world. The small vials that they ship look like everyone else’s, so packaging offers a great way of providing some differentiation. But Abcam also need to ensure that their products remain frozen during the 48 hours it takes to ship them around the world. The brightly coloured, branded building blocks, designed by eg technology Ltd, have improved thermal performance, as well as reducing the dimensions of the external packaging, reducing shipping costs and environmental impact. Abcam have built a marketing campaign around the bricks, with users competing to build the best structures with collected blocks.
Is an energy-saving service that gives the user complete visibility of their home energy usage, empowering them with the knowledge to save energy and money. The innovative service, developed by AlertMe, with Industrial Design by eg technology ltd (both Cambridge-based), comprises of a collection of sleek, unobtrusive hardware and an intuitive user interface which can be viewed on the SmartDisplay, through the online dashboard or on a mobile phone. The majority of homeowners are unsure of their monthly electricity usage and how it links to the amount they are billed. AlertMe SmartEnergy gives them a better understanding of their energy use, allowing them to work out where they can make changes and start saving money. The intuitive design of the SmartEnergy hardware makes the service extremely easy to use and self-install, while looking really good as well.
A&R Cambridge Ltd (ARCAM) is a British manufacturer of hi-fi equipment based in Waterbeach Cambridgeshire. The Alpha was the first great leap. The injection moulded plastic front panel on a piece of English Hi Fi was a departure from usual wood panels and metal knobs (today's Hi-Fi has returned to these materials). It became a classic, admired for both restrained, sleek appearance and its high-end sound performance. Cambridge Design 1976
The Magrini baby changer sets new European standards for baby changers with its strong construction, distinctive appearance, safety features and easy to clean surfaces. This product is part of a new generation of baby products designed by Creactive Design for Magrini.
BioPick and Bio Grid: BioRobotics, a Cambridge-based genetics research instrumentation specialist, had been using standard off-the-shelf parts to build its DNA pick-and- place robot on a low-volume basis. They used industrial design to drastically reduce parts and assembly time resulting in cost savings. They also had a machine that looked a lot better too! The machine was used in the human genome project at the Sanger Institute, Hinxton, south of Cambridge. Cambridge Design 1999
The VectaStar 3500 was the next-generation 3.5GHz wireless broadband system to offer the combination of high bandwidth, high coverage and extended range. Cambridge Broadband took advantage of local expertise to design the system and commissioned Creactive Design; highly experienced in designing for the telecommunications industry, having done extensive work for Nortel, Nokia and Ascom amongst others. An important success factor in any telecoms equipment is that it is easy for the engineers to install. Creactive used their extensive experience to make sure that the engineer’s task of installing a system up a 20 metre telegraph pole in challenging weather was made as safe and simple as possible. The innovative U-bolt locking system makes it easy for engineers to secure the base stations to installation brackets.
Bluetooth development equipment. Not the technology itself but part of development equipment for a Cambridge based innovation that has taken over the world. Simplicity of design and components that maintains focus on the technology use. Origin Product Design
Cameo Hi-Fi system: Myryad wanted to create a Hi-Fi that would combine the sound quality of separates – CD player, tuner and amplifier – with the convenience and aesthetic appeal of an integrated system. No compromise was to be made on either side of the equation. The result is an elegant, low profile HiFi system designed to be simple and easy to use. The same chassis was used for all three units and a 2nd range of five Hi-Fi units too! Using fewer parts Myryad could produce a great Hi-Fi for less investment. Proving that industrial design is not just what you see. “There's no doubt the Cameo's an achingly lovely thing.” T3 Nov 2000 Cambridge Design 1999
